Ice-Cream Heaven

Ice-Cream Heaven

“We all scream for ice-cream!” Leederville has got you covered with a huge range of stores to satisfy that sweet tooth.

Leederville recently welcomed a couple of new additions to the already incredible line-up – Fry’d and Swan River Gelato – so thought we would spend a moment celebrating our favourite iced desserts.

What is it about Leederville that attracts the most delicious desserts in town? We spoke with Gusto Gelato’s main man Sean Lee about all things Leederville, having been part of the neighbourhood for almost seven years.

Why did you choose Leederville for your business?
I’ve always loved Leederville. It reminds me of different inner city pockets of Sydney with its vibrancy and eclectic offerings. As one of the first artisan gelato stores in Perth, Leederville felt like the right fit for our business.

What’s your favourite thing about Leederville?
I love that you can come to Leedy for one reason but end up hanging around for another. There’s a wide cross section of people, too, which is much more interesting when you’re having a coffee and watching the world go by.

If you had to plan your perfect day in Leederville, how would that look?
Oooh a perfect day in Leedy… I’d start with breakfast at either Oxford Yard or Pixel cafe, spend some time flicking through the vinyl collection at Urban Records. Then I’d have lunch at Pinchos, afternoon retail therapy at Remedy or Hunter followed by drinks at the Garden and dinner at Kitsch.

From Gusto’s delicious selection of gelato, what’s your go-to flavour?
Tough decision. Choc Fudge Brownie is always a winner but our Espresso Martini special is pretty damn good, too! And to round off my usual triple scoop would be cheesecake!

Read on for everything you need to know about delicious icey desserts in Leederville.

Gusto Gelato

Gusto gelato is handcrafted in small batches using traditional artisan production techniques learnt in the Northern Italian town of Bologna. No commercial pastes or artificial flavours – they source the finest ingredients and make everything from scratch. Some recent special edition flavours have included Bread & Spread (Nutella gelato with chunks of banana bread and a salted caramel ripple), Sinbad (cinnamon gelato with a WA creamed honey and crushed pistachio pieces), and Pavlova (sweet cream gelato smashed with meringue pieces and a mango, and raspberry ripple). Offerings include vegan, dairy free, and gluten free flavours.

Tutti Frutti

Opening their first WA store right here in Leederville, Tutti Frutti has been serving up specialty frozen yogurt to the masses for 10 years. Some might say they’re the Leederville dessert OG. Just pick your cup size, dispense your frozen yoghurt flavour, and now the hard part to choose your topping.

Roho Bure

Roho Bure started from a garage in South Fremantle and set out to offer a delicious and decadent dessert experience-with a touch of style. Their small batch, dairy free, gluten free, sugar free and vegan Ice Cream is made from scratch in Leederville using a handful of carefully sourced natural and organic ingredients so you can feel as good as it tastes. Some recent special editions flavours include Charcoal Chocolate Orange & Nutini, Gingerbread & Sticky Toffee, and Strawberry Mylkshake. They offer ice-cream sandwiches, ice-cream cakes, biscuits and slices.

Swan River Gelato

One of the newest kids on the block, Swan River Gelato was started by Ben whose parents started making Gelato in Byron Bay in the 80’s. Their ethos was simple; make the finest quality traditional gelato, using only the freshest ingredients, and to serve it with a big smile. They take their inspiration from the bespoke artisan producers of Italy, the ones that are hidden in the backstreets, away from tourist areas, who rely on traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. The majority of flavours are gluten free, and they have dairy free options including sorbets and soy milk flavours.

Opened in Leederville in February 2021.

Fry’d Australia

A popular food truck around Perth, Fry’d chose Leederville as the location for its first store. For the fit-out, they’ve taken inspiration from the Museum of Ice Cream in San Francisco and New York. The have the capacity to make gluten-free ice cream and also offer coffee. Fry’d plans to introduce new flavours each month which will be created by none other than their customers.
